Building a Brighter Future for Whipps Cross
With our local health and social care partners, we’re working towards building a brand new state-of-the-art hospital at Whipps Cross as part of the Government’s flagship new hospital building programme.
The redevelopment of Whipps Cross offers a historic opportunity to replace an ageing and sprawling estate with a brand new hospital and to transform the wider Whipps Cross site with new homes, new green and public spaces, other health and care services and community facilities.
Watch our short film which brings to life our exciting plans for the new Whipps Cross hospital:
What we’re doing
Our overarching vision is to create ‘a hospital in a garden and a garden in a hospital’, bringing stronger connections to the local areas and the neighbouring Epping Forest, with the healing benefits that that can provide.
The new Whipps Cross Hospital will provide all the current core NHS hospital services you’d expect – A&E, maternity, operating theatres, intensive care, imaging, inpatients and outpatients. But it will do this in new modern facilities, with more clinical space, more care provided on the same day to reduce the need for admissions and a better experience for patients and staff.
The flexible and adaptable design will be able to respond more efficiently and effectively to changing healthcare demands in the future. We have also identified additional space on the Whipps Cross site for the new hospital to expand if necessary.
The redevelopment of the wider Whipps Cross site is an opportunity to position the new hospital at the heart of a new neighbourhood with much needed new homes as well as other health and wellbeing services, leisure and cultural facilities and public spaces, bringing real benefits and investment to the local community.
Barts Health is working on the Whipps Cross redevelopment programme in partnership with:
- East London Health and Care Partnership
- London Borough of Waltham Forest
- North East London NHS Foundation Trust
- Waltham Forest, Newham and Tower Hamlets Clinical Commissioning Groups
- Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Groups
These partner organisations have agreed a condordat which affirms how they will work together to deliver their shared vision.
Alwen Williams, Group Chief Executive of Barts Health said, "Whipps Cross is such a valued asset for our community, and the agreement we’ve signed shows that we are all committed to delivering a shared plan to make the best use of the site for generations to come."
Your feedback is hugely important to us and will help to shape our plans for the new Whipps Cross Hospital and the redevelopment of the wider site.
