What to expect when you visit Newham Hospital

Newham Hospital provides all the services expected of a local hospital including emergency care, surgery, children’s health, women’s health, maternity services, specialist medicine, long-term care and diagnostics.

We also have a dedicated stroke unit (for rehabilitation following the initial 72 hours urgent treatment normally at The Royal London) and clinical support services.

We see more than 500 patients in our Accident and Emergency (A&E) department every day and have one of the largest maternity units in the UK with more than 6,000 births each year. Our state-of-the-art Rainbow Centre is fully geared up to meet the needs of our young patients and their families in a child-friendly environment and we are dementia friendly across the whole site.

We are proud that many of our 1,700 staff stay at Newham Hospital for many years because of the opportunities to develop professionally, the real and meaningful relationships they make with their peers, and the visible impact they make working at a hospital serving one of the most diverse populations in England.

Visiting and attending Newham Hospital with a loved one

The health, safety and wellbeing of our patients, communities and staff continues to be our top priority. To ensure this, we are currently limiting the number of visitors patients in our hospitals can have. 

We are regularly reviewing and adapting our guidance, so please note this information is subject to change at short notice. To keep up to date with our visitor guidelines, please continue to check this website.

Our staff are working hard to keep everyone safe and so we ask that you treat them with kindness and respect when visiting our hospital.

Your safety when visiting our hospitals

All visitors coming to our hospital to visit a loved one must:

  • Wear a surgical face mask unless you have a medical exemption or are under 11 years old. Other face coverings are not permitted. When you arrive at our hospital you will be provided with a surgical mask to wear at all times.
  • Use the hand gel provided
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Maintain social distancing

What to expect on arrival

When you arrive at our hospital, it is likely you will be asked questions about why you’re visiting the hospital, who you are visiting and if you have any symptoms of Covid-19.

Please note, we are caring for Covid-19 patients in separate areas of our hospitals which will have the right infection prevention and control measures in place for them and to help protect you. You will be expected to follow all infection prevention and control measures outlined in each area of the hospital that you visit.

If you feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms

You must not visit our hospital if you have any Covid-19, cold or flu like symptoms, or if you feel unwell.

Booking a visit

If you would like to book a visit, please contact the ward that your loved one is on, by calling the switchboard on 020 7476 4000. The team on the ward will then work with you to arrange a visiting time, if your loved one is eligible for a visit.

Our visiting guidance for inpatients (people staying in hospital)

At the moment, we are limiting visitors to our hospitals. The only inpatients at our hospital who are allowed a visitor (one visitor per day) are:

  • People with dementia
  • People with learning difficulties
  • People who need a familiar carer / supporter / personal assistant
  • Children

Our visiting guidance for people receiving end-of-life care

People receiving end-of-life care at our hospital will be allowed two visitors per day in the last two days of life. Please contact the ward team to arrange this (see above).

Our visiting guidance for maternity services

We are still allowing visitors to people availing of maternity services at our hospital.

Pregnancy: We are allowing one visitor, usually the named birth partner, to accompany women to their antenatal appointments, subject to risk assessment at entrance to the hospital.

Labour/birth: In line with national guidance, we welcome one visitor, usually the named birth partner, to accompany women at all stages of labour including inductions and caesarean sections and the immediate postnatal period. A ‘maternity mate’ can also be present with the nominated birthing partner.  A Doula’s presence is agreed prior to labour on a case by case basis. Please speak to your maternity team about this.

Postnatal: Our maternity unit is open to the nominated birthing partner to visit during a designated 3 hour period, provided they have a negative Covid-19 test (lateral flow or PCR). More information can be found here.

Our visiting guidance for outpatient appointments

People attending for outpatient appointments can still bring a chaperone or carer if needed.

Bringing someone with you when you come to visit

Please do not bring anyone with you when you come to visit. The only exception is if you are visiting someone who is receiving end-of-life care (see above).

Visiting a loved one on a Covid-19 ward   

We are allowing one visitor per person per day in our Covid-19 wards. Like all visitors to our hospital, anyone visiting a loved one on a ward with Covid-19 positive patients must have proof of a negative lateral flow test upon arrival at the hospital and must wear a surgical face covering provided to them at the hospital entrance.  Before entering the ward, you will also be asked to put on personal protective equipment, namely an apron, gloves and a face shield, in addition to your surgical face mask. 

Please note that entering a ward with patients who have tested positive for Covid-19 poses a risk of contracting the virus. Before coming to visit a loved one in one of these wards or areas (including intensive care), please consider, especially if you are vulnerable or have an underlying health condition, if it is safe for you, and your family and friends, for you to do so.

Newham Hospital is located in Plaistow in the East End of London, within the London borough of Newham. You can travel to the hospital in a number of ways including on foot, by car, by bike or by public transport. By bus

The following buses stop close to Newham Hospital, 276 and 376 on Glen road, 147, 262, 300 and 473 on Prince Regent Lane and 5, 115 and 330 as well as night bus N15 on Barking road. Low-floor wheelchair accessible buses run on all routes serving Newham University Hospital.

By tube

The closest underground/overground stations are Plaistow which is served by the District and Hammersmith and City lines and Prince Regent served by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

Walking from Plaistow underground station to Newham Hospital takes around 26 minutes or 33 minutes to The Gateway Surgical Centre. Alternatively the 262 and 473 buses provide connections to Plaistow underground station.

Walking from Prince Regent Dockland Light Railway (DLR) station to Newham Hospital takes around 26 minutes or 32 minutes to The Gateway Surgical Centre. Alternatively the 147, 300 and 473 buses provide connections to Prince Regent Dockland Light Railway (DLR) station.

Taxis can also be taken from these stations. 

Freedom passes

Older persons Freedom Pass- The Freedom Pass for older people allows free travel across London and free local bus journeys nationally.

Disabled persons Freedom Pass- The travel pass for disabled people allows free travel across London and free bus journeys nationally. You can use your pass on most journeys across London but there are a few exceptions to when and where you can use your card.

A 60+ London Oyster photocard- allows you to travel free on public transport in London from the age of 60 until you qualify for a Freedom Pass. To be eligible for a 60+ London Oyster photocard, you must: Live in a London borough and be aged 60 or over.

By car or taxi

Limited car parking is available in the hospital together with disabled spaces. Please only bring your car if it is absolutely essential. There is a charge for visitors using the car park as follows:

up to 3 hours: £2.20

up to 6 hours: £4.50

up to 8 hours: £8.00

Up to 24 hours: £16.50

Two short stay pick-up/drop-off bays are also provided adjacent to both main hospital entrances.

Infopoint help-points allow you to make free calls to taxi companies and public transport information lines to arrange your journey home. There are infopoints located at A&E, St Andrew's Wing, Gateway Surgical Centre and West Enrance at Newham Hospital.

Refunds of hospital transport costs

You may be able to claim a refund for the cost of your transport to hospital through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) if you: 

  • are not eligible for patient transport services (PTS)
  • cannot afford the cost of travelling to hospital
  • cannot get a friend or relative to take you

By bike

We encourage visitors, staff and patients living nearby to cycle to the hospital if possible. Cycle parking facilities are available around the hospital.

Cycle route in the local area include Cycle Superhighway 3 (CS3) which runs from Barking to Tower gateway and also the Greenway which runs from Beckton to Hackney.

Improving the discharge process at Newham Hospital

In partnership with Healthwatch Newham, Newham Hospital are running a project looking at improving our discharge process.

The project will start out as a pilot in one ward (the acute assessment unit (AAU)). At the point of discharge, patients will be asked if they consent to be contacted by a Healthwatch volunteer 7 – 14 days after discharge to answer questions in a survey.

These responses will then be anonymised and returned to Newham Hospital staff, who will analyse and assess the anonymous responses, identifying areas of improvement within the hospital’s discharge process.

Opt-out HIV and Hepatitis C testing at Newham A&E

A new testing programme has launched in Newham Hospital’s A&E department. The opt-out programme is providing tests for both HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) to all adults who come to Newham Hospital’s A&E and need a blood test as part of their care. Our facilities

Overnight accommodation

We are not able to offer overnight accommodation for relatives on the hospital site.

There are a small number of private rooms available to be booked within the maternity department so that new mothers can have their partners stay with them at the hospital after giving birth. These can be booked with the midwifery team.

Quiet room

A quiet room is available for patients and visitors who wish to pray or quietly reflect on the first floor, zone 12, of the main hospital site and on the third floor of the Gateway Surgical Centre. A pin number is required to enter the room within the main hospital. Ward staff can give you the number. Both rooms have ablution facilities.

Chaplaincy

Chaplains of many faiths are available to speak to all patients, relatives and carers. The chaplaincy team welcomes everyone, whatever your faith or beliefs and whether or not you follow a religion. The chaplains have links with many faith communities and will always try to get an appropriate representative when asked to do so. The service is confidential and respectful.

Telephones

There is a payphone available in the emergency department.

Reception/information desks

There is a reception desk in the St Andrew’s Wing main hospital entrance at zone 1.

Cash machines

There are cash machines available in the main hospital building in zones 2 and 10.

Car parking

There is car parking available for all visitors near the main entrance of the hospital. The cost of this is:

  • Up to 3 hours - £2.20
  • 3 to 6 hours - £4.50
  • 6 to 8 hours - £8.00
  • Up to 24 hours - £16.50

Restaurant and coffee shops

A wide range of meals and snacks can be purchased from the eatwell restaurant, situated on the first floor, zone 4 and is open from 7am to 8pm every day.

Breakfast service is from 7am until 10am and offers a traditional full English, breakfast muffins, porridge, pastries and fresh bean to cup coffee.

Lunch service is 12pm until 2pm and includes at least three delicious hot dishes everyday including a classic ‘Home from Home’ dish and ‘Global Flavours’ a dish with authentic flavours of the world. If you fancy something lighter choose from filled baked sweet and white potatoes, homemade soup, freshly prepared salad bar or range of hot and cold sandwiches.

Dinner service is from 5.30pm until 7pm serving a choice of two home cooked meals, with a vegetarian option always available. Along with this we offer a choice of paninis, toasties, sandwiches, salads and a great selection of snacks.  

Out of these hours there is a selection of Soho sandwiches and salads, fresh bean to cup coffee, tea, cold drinks and snacks.

Light refreshments are available in the main hospital from the Fontanella coffee shop, based in zone 6 in the outpatients waiting area and is open Monday to Friday, 8am until 6pm and on the ground floor of the Gateway Surgical Centre. They offer a range of Soho sandwiches and paninis, freshly baked Danish pastries all accompanied by barista style hot and cold drinks.

The restaurant and coffee shops are open to the public, visitors, patients and staff.

Wifi

Free wifi is available throughout the hospital for patients. There’s no time limit on use, and capacity has been expanded in order to ensure continuous access for as many users as possible.

Please note that the wifi cannot support streaming movies or high-intensity computer games.

Barts Hospital Radio is free and provides programs of entertainment, music, and news: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Gateway Surgical Centre

The Gateway Surgical Centre is a state-of-the-art stand-alone facility run by Barts Health for our patients.

The Centre boasts some of the most innovative and modern diagnostic and surgical facilities available anywhere in the world, with doctors and nurses who are highly skilled, experienced and caring. 

Clinically excellent

Bright and airy, the 39-bed centre, which opened in 2005, is situated in the grounds of Newham Hospital. It offers safe, fast, day-care, elective surgery and diagnostic procedures in many different specialties. The Centre also houses the Trust's sports injuries clinic and the fracture clinic providing a comprehensive service on one site.

Patients may be referred to the Gateway Surgical Centre by a consultant in Outpatients or by their GP if they need elective surgery in one of the following specialities: General Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics or Urology. Typical operations will include hip replacements, hernia repairs, gall bladder removal and hysterectomy.
